Skopiem, the element of discovery.

We at Skopiem believe talent and passion exist everywhere. We make it our job to empower students to share their fascination for science with creativity and academic rigour. Through collaboration and shared exploration, we encourage all students to go beyond the textbook and discover the wonders of science: the weird, the wacky and the downright strange!

Where the name comes from.

Skopiem takes its name from the ancient Greek word skopeo (σκοπέω) meaning to look, to examine, to aim. It’s a word that captures something we think is at the heart of science: looking around us and asking what’s really going on. We saw it, loved it, and thought it deserved a second life.

Why Skopiem exists.

Science at school can sometimes feel like a series of fact that have to be memorised rather than a world to explore. We’re taught from a textbook and each year is rinse and repeat, but real science doesn’t work like that. It’s messy, interdisciplinary and collaborative, full of questions that we don’t have all the answers to yet.

Skopiem exists to give that curiosity somewhere to go.

How it works.

Student contributors choose a topic that genuinely excites them - something they stumbled across, can’t explain, or something they wished someone had told them about sooner. The further from the curriculum the better! From there, university student editors work with them to shape, refine, and fact-check their piece before it’s published under their name. No experience necessary, just curiosity.

Founder’s Note

Skopiem was founded in 2026 by Emily Dann, a Natural Sciences student at the University of Bath, inspired by the belief that every student deserves the chance to explore science on their own terms.
